People of the world are getting fatter day-by-day. Obesity is a problem of not only developed countries like the U.S.A but also of many developing countries such as Malaysia, Thailand, Philippine, etc. Regarding this present situation of obesity, it is a surprise that people of Japan are still staying slim to a healthy body weight. It is no exaggeration to say that the Japanese could be counted of having the fittest BMI (body mass index: weight / height2). If BMI is over 30, people are “obese”. 3.5% of the total population comes under obese BMI. Among the 192 countries, Japan ranks 179th in obesity. In recent time, a compound was found “Fucoxanthin” in kelp which could be attributed to the good health benefits of kelp without its knowledge in the past.

Fucoxanthin is a xanthophyll which promotes fat burning within fat cells in white adipose tissue by increasing the expression of thermogenin. There are 2 types of fat cells: brown adipose (fat) cell, and the white adipose (fat) cell. Brown adipose cell produces heat by burning fat. White adipose cell accumulates fat and it contributes to obesity.

When hibernating animals hibernate in cold winter, their brown adipose cells produce heat by burning fat without exercise. This could be an excellent slimming method, but increasing brown adipose cells (BAC) is only possible in extremely cold climate such as that of Greenland. We could stay with Inuit people for a few weeks to increase brown adipose cells. But, as soon as we come back home, they decrease.

Japanese researchers have discovered a safe substance that let white adipose cells burn fat. (http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/15896707) Proteins called UCP1 (Mitochondrial uncoupling protein 1: uncoupling protein 1) are specifically expressed on the inner mitochondrial membrane of brown adipose cells. UCP1 is a key substance of heat production and it burns extra fat. However, since adults have few brown adipose cells, there are few UCP1.

When fucoxanthin is taken, UCP1 is expressed in many white adipose cells, and fat is burned. This is a very important discovery, but strangely enough, it is not well known. At the present time, food ingredients expressing UCP1 in white adipose cells other than fucoxanthin have not been found.

Figure (1) shows the result of giving KKAy mice of spontaneously diabetic obesity model a food mixed with fucoxanthin for 4 weeks. Compared with the control, the visceral fat is significantly decreased. At the same time, the expression level of UCP1 was also observed to increase markedly. Figure (2)

Extract of Cherry Blossom : Gift from the Goddess of Sakura

The extract of Cherry Blossom is not for slimming effects like that of Ashitaba Chalcone and Fucoxanthin but the extract is very important to prevent ill effects caused of being obese. It suppresses production of AGE (Advanced Glycation End Products). Obese people have much more WFC (white fat cell) than slim people. WFC plays a role in increasing sugar in blood similar to that of diabetes. The more amount of sugar in blood leads to the process of Glycation in which changes protein to from Advanced Glycation End Products (AGEs). These proteins do not perform similar functions as their original protein form. AGEs inhibit the action of mitochondria, increase the oxidative stress there, and gradually destroy normal cells. AGEs can also come into the body from foods like burned brown part of hotcake and barbecue. Probably, 70% of the total population of this modern world suffers from AGEs.

Extract of Cherry Blossom contains inhibitors of noxious AGEs production. It has two important glycosides: “1-caffeoyl-O-β-D-glucopyranoside” and “quercetin 3-O-β-D- glucopyranoside”. They suppress the production of AGEs. About 30% of the proteins constituting the human body are collagen. Collagen also exists in the inner membrane of the artery, and it plays a role like a kind of cushion. Glycation of collagen can result in serious problems. The figure shows the result of adding extract of cherry blossom, caffeoyl glucose or quercetin glucoside, to a mixture of albumin and glucose. The mixture was incubated at 60℃ for 48 hours.
