Shell ginger (Alpinia zerumbet) is a tropical perennial plant that grows in some South East Asian nations.  It is easily recognizable for it’s beautiful white flowers in the spring and summer. There are hundreds of varieties of shell ginger and they are quickly becoming a popular indoor and outdoor plant.  For centuries it has been used in Okinawa, Japan, whose population is frequently cited as ‘the healthiest on earth,’ boasts an impressively low incidence of cardiovascular disease, stroke and cancer. In Okinawa the leaves of Alpinia Zerumbet are consumed regularly as an ingredient in food, and used to warp rice dumplings. Now the modern research has shown that Shell Ginger contains high concentrations of polyphenols, a powerful antioxidant. The scientist made a recent experiment on worms and dis covered that those fed on a daily diet of getto lived an average of 22.6 percent longer than the control group.

 What is a Polyphenol?

A Polyphenol is an organic chemical that is widely known to protect people from certain health problems and the effects of aging. They can also block the enzymes that cancers need for growth and can deactivate substances that promote the growth of cancers. The research done on the health benefits of green tea and red wine polyphenols have received a lot of media attention.

Shell Ginger is packed with dozens of polyphenols such as chlorogenic acid, ferulic acid, quercetin, epicatechin, catechin, and Kaempferol.

Chlorogenic acid – Recent studies have indicated a potential improvement in carbohydrate metabolism. Chlorogenic acid is shown to decrease the uptake of glucose in the body and assist in regulating blood glucose levels. What makes their antioxidant properties so unique is their target impact in the reduction of lipid peroxidation, resulting in significant heart health benefits.

Ferulic acid – is a powerful antioxidant that keeps your body’s cells safe from the harmful effects of free radicals. Its antioxidant effect on the skin is particularly impressive and is often used as an ingredient in skin care products. In Japan, researchers specializing in Alzheimer’s disease have focused attention on ferulic acid because of its ability to abrogate the destructive and toxic effects of beta amyloid peptide which is the protein now believed to impair memory in Alzheimer’s disease.

Quercetin - Several laboratory studies show quercetin may have anti-inflammatory properties, and it is being investigated for a wide range of potential health benefits.

Epicatechin - has insulin mimicking action and improves heart health. Dr. Norman Hollenberg of Harvard Medical School found that Kuna Indians, who live on the San Blas Island Chain in Panama and drink high quantities of cocoa drinks, have a lower risk of stroke, heart failure, cancer and diabetes compared to the Indians living on the mainland. Dr. Norman Hollenberg even suggests to consider epicatechin as a vitamin.

Catechin - is becoming widely known due to the studies done on green tea. In laboratory tests, the catechins present in tea leaves have been shown to inhibit the growth of cancer cells. In addition to this, they are able to prevent the activity of free radicals, the molecules which cause cellular damage that can lead to cancer.

Kaempferol - is a strong antioxidant and helps to prevent oxidative damage of our cells, lipids and DNA.

Polyphenol Benefits

Research into polyphenols is ongoing. Polyphenols are widely known to reduce the risk of cardiovascular disease and many other chronic diseases. Many polyphenols are believed to have anti-inflammatory and immune boosting properties, all of which are helpful for improving health and general wellbeing.

Most polyphenols are anti-oxidants, and being anti-oxidants they can minimize the damage done by free radicals on the body. Free radicals are often blamed for causing cellular damage which is associated with aging. Polyphenols are also known to help the immune system, and a strong immune system is important for good health. Polyphenols can also improve the circulation of blood, which can lower the risk for heart and cardiovascular disease.
